CHAPTER XIV
HARMONIZING MELODIES RESUMED
In a preceding chapter the student harmonized given Melodies, using Roots of Chords only in the Bass. At this point the Harmonizing of Melodies may be again taken up and a few First Inversions introduced. More variety may be gained in this manner and awkward places be avoided. A Chord in its First Inversion has a certain lightness and freedom which it does not obtain in any of the Positions.
Here is an example for Analysis. Let the student indicate in writing the name of each Position and Inversion, giving the Root beneath.
Position or Inversion:
Fifth Pos. First Inv. -----------1----
Using all means so far at his disposal and observing all preceding Principles, let the student now work out effective harmonies for the following Melodies. They must be made to sound well. Strive for good Motion and an easy and melodious Bass.
